Part trivia, part celebration, all electric. Everything a true Mach-E fan needs to know — and plenty they don't.
Ford's first long-range EV was originally just going to be a generic compliance car. When Jim Hackett took over as CEO in 2017, he created "Ford Team Edison" and pushed the team to build something worthy of a real nameplate — and that's when the Mustang connection was born.
Ford initially teased the car as the "Ford Mach 1" — a sacred Mustang name. The backlash was instant and fierce. CEO Jim Farley called it "an evaluation." The team pivoted to "Mach-E," paying homage to the Mach 1 legacy while charting a new path.
Putting the Mustang name on a four-door electric crossover was, in Ford's words, "not an easy decision." But it forced the design team to scrutinize every detail — from the double-brow dashboard to the tri-bar taillights — to earn the pony badge.
It won the 2021 North American SUV of the Year, Car and Driver's Editor's Choice, and Electric Vehicle of the Year. By April 2022, it was so popular that Ford had to stop accepting new orders for the model year.
New CEO Jim Hackett creates a dedicated EV team, shifting gears from a forgettable compliance car toward something with soul.
The Mustang Mach-E is revealed to the world. Ford simultaneously releases a documentary short film, "Making the Mustang Mach-E," detailing the creation journey.
The 2021 model year rolls off the line at the Cuautitlán Assembly plant in Mexico and into customer driveways.
480 HP, 634 lb-ft of torque, Brembo brakes, Pirelli tires — the Mach-E proves it can truly run with the ponies.
Demand outstrips supply. Ford stops accepting orders for the 2022 model year — a victim of its own success.
Ford drops the California Route One and adds the Rally model above the GT — a rugged, adventure-ready Mach-E for those who want to take the pony off-road.
No engine means a front trunk — and it comes with a built-in drain plug. Fill it with ice for tailgating, then just drain and rinse. Ford literally designed it for parties.
Seriously. There are buttons that pop the doors open and a tiny ledge on the front doors. The rear doors? You just grab the edge after the button pops them. It reduces drag and looks futuristic.
The Mach-E 1400 packs seven electric motors making 1,400 HP and over 2,300 lb-ft of torque. It took over 10,000 hours of development and generates 2,600 lbs of downforce. It's mostly composite fiber — even lighter than carbon fiber.
Despite being a crossover SUV, the Mach-E is actually about an inch shorter and narrower than the Mustang coupe in both length and width. Just much taller.
Forget key fobs. The Mach-E was designed to use your smartphone as the primary key. There's also a backup keypad built into the B-pillar. The car lights up with pony puddle lights when it senses you approaching.
The Mach-E includes a real-time Brake Coach that scores how efficiently you're using regenerative braking. One-pedal driving lets you accelerate and slow down without ever touching the brake.
Ford added a safety feature that prevents a door from closing until it's been fully opened and shut again — designed to prevent little fingers from getting smashed by siblings.
The wide dashboard integrates a sound bar that spans across it, creating an immersive audio experience usually found in high-end home entertainment systems, not cars.
The panoramic glass roof has an infrared-reflective coating that blocks heat in summer and retains warmth in winter — without needing a traditional sunshade. It also adds structural rigidity.
