How The Electric Pony Was Born

🚫

It Almost Wasn't A Mustang

Ford's first long-range EV was originally just going to be a generic compliance car. When Jim Hackett took over as CEO in 2017, he created "Ford Team Edison" and pushed the team to build something worthy of a real nameplate — and that's when the Mustang connection was born.

😤

The Name Controversy

Ford initially teased the car as the "Ford Mach 1" — a sacred Mustang name. The backlash was instant and fierce. CEO Jim Farley called it "an evaluation." The team pivoted to "Mach-E," paying homage to the Mach 1 legacy while charting a new path.

🏇

A Name Worth Fighting For

Putting the Mustang name on a four-door electric crossover was, in Ford's words, "not an easy decision." But it forced the design team to scrutinize every detail — from the double-brow dashboard to the tri-bar taillights — to earn the pony badge.

🏆

Silencing the Critics

It won the 2021 North American SUV of the Year, Car and Driver's Editor's Choice, and Electric Vehicle of the Year. By April 2022, it was so popular that Ford had to stop accepting new orders for the model year.

Things You Probably Didn't Know

01

The Frunk Is a Cooler

No engine means a front trunk — and it comes with a built-in drain plug. Fill it with ice for tailgating, then just drain and rinse. Ford literally designed it for parties.

02

It Has No Door Handles

Seriously. There are buttons that pop the doors open and a tiny ledge on the front doors. The rear doors? You just grab the edge after the button pops them. It reduces drag and looks futuristic.

03

The 1400 HP Prototype

The Mach-E 1400 packs seven electric motors making 1,400 HP and over 2,300 lb-ft of torque. It took over 10,000 hours of development and generates 2,600 lbs of downforce. It's mostly composite fiber — even lighter than carbon fiber.

04

Smaller Than the Coupe

Despite being a crossover SUV, the Mach-E is actually about an inch shorter and narrower than the Mustang coupe in both length and width. Just much taller.

05

Your Phone Is the Key

Forget key fobs. The Mach-E was designed to use your smartphone as the primary key. There's also a backup keypad built into the B-pillar. The car lights up with pony puddle lights when it senses you approaching.

06

Brake Coach

The Mach-E includes a real-time Brake Coach that scores how efficiently you're using regenerative braking. One-pedal driving lets you accelerate and slow down without ever touching the brake.

07

Anti-Finger-Crush Doors

Ford added a safety feature that prevents a door from closing until it's been fully opened and shut again — designed to prevent little fingers from getting smashed by siblings.

08

Built-In Sound Bar

The wide dashboard integrates a sound bar that spans across it, creating an immersive audio experience usually found in high-end home entertainment systems, not cars.

09

Infrared Magic Roof

The panoramic glass roof has an infrared-reflective coating that blocks heat in summer and retains warmth in winter — without needing a traditional sunshade. It also adds structural rigidity.

Hidden Easter Eggs 🥚

Tap to reveal the secrets Ford hid inside, under, and around the Mach-E.

"Electric Ponies Live Here" +
Crawl underneath the Mach-E and look at the electric motor casing. Cast right into the metal, you'll find the phrase "ELECTRIC PONIES LIVE HERE." Most owners will never see it — which is exactly the point of a great easter egg.
🏎 Pony Under the Charge Port +
Open the charge port door and look closely. There's a small pony emblem stamped above the word "HORSEPOWER" — a cheeky nod to what's actually powering this machine.
💡 Pony Puddle Lights +
When you walk up to your Mach-E with your phone key, the side mirrors project a galloping pony silhouette onto the ground below — welcoming you like royalty before you even touch the door.
🌹 The Secret Rose Drawing +
In the Sketch app on the 15.5" touchscreen, rapidly tap the top of the screen for 4 seconds. A red rose will auto-draw itself. Ford software engineer Joshua Moore hid this as a tribute to his daughter, Rose, who was born while he was developing the app.
🐴 Trunk Light Pony +
Open the trunk and look at the lighting inside. Eagle-eyed owners have spotted a small Mustang pony shape worked into the trunk light design — a subtle detail that rewards those who pay attention.
🔢 1964½ in the Promo +
In Ford's "Electri-Vacation" promotional video at the 0:22 mark, the number on the house reads "1964½" — the model year of the very first Mustang. Ford's way of reminding everyone: this IS a real Mustang.
